Best Disney Covers: Number Four

This list was originally going to be a top ten underrated Disney songs list, which are basically songs that I like but wished were sung better. So when I found better sung versions of these songs, I decided to switch it into a top ten best Disney covers list and search for other covers to complete the set. With this in mind, it should be no surprise that this list includes some of Disney’s lesser-known songs. This is intentional. The entire purpose of this list is to introduce some new songs/renditions for those who love listening to Disney music, not necessarily the BEST covers ever. Now, time for some more disclaimers:

1. Disney does not equal Pixar
2. Songs only from the Disney canon (no sequels, Mary Poppins, etc.)
3. One song per movie (for variety)
4. No medleys (sorry, Paint)

Number Four: Second Star to the Right (Peter Pan)

Views on YouTube: over 30,000

I bet you didn’t see this one coming! I love Second Star to the Right. It embodies Disney’s movie mantra–to keep believing in your dreams. In my opinion, it could replace When You Wish Upon a Star as Disney’s theme park anthem.

Admittedly, I am stretching a bit to include Second Star to the Right on this list. Second Star to the Right is a fairly obscure song, so I couldn’t find as many covers on YouTube. I’ve settled on the sequel’s rendition of the song for this top ten list, Return to Neverland. But this song does appear in Peter Pan, so I say it’s fair game! It’s my list, dang it.

Walt Disney did this wonderful thing where he would open the title credits in tandem with a choral song. Snow White did it. Cinderella did it. And Peter Pan does it with Second Star to the Right. I think this is why this song isn’t as well known. All the really popular Disney songs I can think of are usually sung by the characters of the story, not by a choir. It’s a shame, since some really wonderful compositions have become overlooked as a result. But not here on Taestful Reviews!

Jonatha Brooke lends her angelic voice to bring out the heartfelt melody of Second Star to the Right in her take of the song. At around the 50 second mark, you’ll notice that there is neat integration of the classic lullaby, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, into the song. Although the video doesn’t come with the entertainment value of some of the other covers I’ve shared through this list, I do think the song and vocal performance is captivating enough in itself. Really, my only complaint is that the song is too short. And that not as many people know about this song.
